German-Czech Poetry Slam

A project by Jennifer Schevardo

Host organization: Collegium Bohemicum

December 2005, Klub Circus, Ústí nad Labem (Czech Republic)

What is slam poetry? Poetry and presentation, competition and consensus, entertainment and tension, word play and a battle of words. It is the best thing you can do with words.

Nora Gomringer, Gauner, and Tobias Hoffmann performed for Germany, while the Czech side was represented by Marian Palla, Tomáš Vtípil, and Jiří Černý. Jaromír Konečný moderated the entire event, with charming banter in both Czech and German. Everyone was allowed to perform in his or her own language - the audience had Czech translations of the German texts - but much of slam poetry comes across without understanding (all) the words.
