Lenau Haus Pécs, Hungary

The Lenau Association was founded in 1985 in Pécs by the strongly represented Hungarian-German minority members of the Baranya/Branau region. Until then it had only been possible for Hungarian-Germans in socialist Hungary to nurture their culture and history in a public forum only in limited numbers. At the end of the eighties, and with the help of private and public funds from the German Federal Republic, the association established its own building in the historical city center of Pécs. As an international meeting place, the Lenau Haus is open to anyone interested in Hungarian-German and German culture. Nikolaus Lenau, the Hungarian-born romantic poet of the pre-March era, was chosen as the namesake of the association as well as the building.

Events are held regularly in the building as part of the Lenau Association's work; the spectrum ranges from lectures, readings, discussion evenings about concerts, dance performances and exhibits, to active project work with school-age children and college students.

The Lenau Haus and its colleagues play an important role as mediator in the City of Stadt Pécs and the entire region of Southwest Hungary. Since 2004, this trend has been greatly supported and expanded through the work of the Robert Bosch Cultural Manager.
