Re-Opening the Public

An initiative within the framework of the Robert Bosch Cultural Managers Network.

A project by Barbara Anna Bernsmeier, Kathrin Oerters and Cornelia Reichel, Robert Bosch cultural managers in the Russian Federation.

29th to 31st of January 2015, Volgograd, Russia

At the Forum participated five teams from different Russian cities. These were Archangelsk, Chelyabinsk, Ulyanovsk, Volgograd and Astrakhan, all of them hosting the Robert Bosch Cultural Manager programme. The teams were trans-sectoral including curators, artists, cultural managers, city planners, representatives of the administration and NGOs.

These participants from the Russian regions worked with a team of international experts. Among the experts were representatives from the Robert Bosch Cultural Manager Network with expertise in the fields of public art and community based artwork: Olga Vostretsova, Christine Rahn, Christian Gracza and Matthias Einhoff. Maria Veits (TOK Curators, St. Petersburg) and Darya Tkatsheva (State Center for Contemporary Arts, Kirov) were invited as Russian experts.

The aim of the Forum was to initiate sustainable, long-term, transregional and international projects, which will be realised in the five Russian regions until August 2015. During the Forum each of the teams developed a concept for their specific undertaking, aiming on re-vitalising unused urban spaces through public art projects and local community involvement. The approaches of the cities showed a great variety: reviving abandoned parks, rethinking industrial zones, reconceptualising urban functional buildings.
