Collision Course - Skater Festival and Workshops

A project initiated by Timo Köster, further developed by Stefanie Hübner and Bernd Janning

Host organization: International Elias Canetti Society

2008 to 2012, Skate Park and Canetti House, Ruse (Bulgaria)

For all of this regions' skater fans, this festival proves to be the highlight of the year: The Skateboard Festival Collision Course. The participants of the festival had a chance to demonstrate their skills in the categories "Parcours" and "Best Trick." The competition was always well attended and concluded with an award ceremony. Every year the program was new and varied: Bands including the German indie group "Cloudberry," the singer "Arlito," and the Bulgarian band "Perfect Skies" played for the competition in Ruse over the years. In addition, after short introductions delivered in beatboxing and rapping, DJs like MC Trix and DJ Mesia from Berlin gave audience members cause to dance. Various workshops taught participants the basic techniques for DJing, beatboxing, and breakdancing. Once in the Canetti House, the German graffiti expert David Bethmann gave young people from Ruse and the region theoretical and practical demonstrations of how really good graffiti is created. On another occasion, hip hop took center stage at the festival as an ever-increasing subculture in Bulgaria: a generic term for a whole range of possibilities for expression that were tested, improved, demonstrated, and appreciated, accompanied by thunderous applause.

The festival offers an annual platform for connecting Bulgaria's young and diverse skater and music scenes with the German and international scenes. The event was established as a set component of Ruse's cultural program and continues to grow. In 2013, the festival was organized by Elisa Calosi.
